Walthamstow Wetlands is Europe's largest urban wetland nature reserve, located just 15 minutes from central London. The 211 hectare nature reserve’s national and international ecological importance is highlighted as being a Site of Special Scientific Interest. Walthamstow Wetlands also forms part of the Lee Valley Special Protection Area and is on the Ramsar List of Wetlands of International Importance.
The reservoirs offer a haven for wintering wildfowl populations such as pochard, shoveler and gadwell and form a regionally important breeding ground for grey heron, tufted duck, little egret and cormorant. Other iconic birds such as kingfisher and peregrine falcon can be seen in the area throughout the year.
