Zig Zag

Walthamstow Wetlands is an amazing local resource, enjoyed by residents and non-residents alike.  During unsettled times we still need to feel connected with nature, even if that is from the confines of our own homes.  Artist Nicholas Pankhurst has a history of working in Walthamstow and invites residents to be part of a wider project to celebrate the beautiful landscape and wildlife on our doorstep.

Local residents are invited to share their images, drawings, writings and audio recording of their experience of the Wetlands.

Inspired by Paul Klee’s idea of taking a drawn line for a walk, it is a collection of the images we find in our imaginations of the wetlands. A cartography of the wetlands visitor psychogeography. Open to all, the images will be collected and curated by the artist into a kind of filmic tapestry of the Wetlands for our time, to be enjoyed anywhere.  Residents will share their images by emailing them in or sharing them on Instagram.  Images will be collected in a dedicated instagram account and website, which will develop as the project unfolds. The artist will then select and manipulate all the images into a film and soundscape that will be hosted online and can be shown at the wetland centre itself for visitors who are able to access the site safely.
